Knowing how to sew can come in handy in numerous scenarios, such as patching up a favorite pair of pants or performing an emergency fluffendectomy on teddy bears. Practice suturing skills with today's Groupon: for $69, you get a four-week beginning or intermediate-level sewing class at PDX Seamsters (a $143 value). Entry-level students may purchase two of today's deal and use the first for the beginner course and the second for the intermediate class.
PDX Seamsters' Emily and Jim patiently instruct students of all skill levels in the finer points of needle wielding during three-hour sewing courses. The Get Up and Sew beginning course enrolls a maximum of 16 people and lays out the fundamentals of sewing on both a machine and by hand, giving students the skills required to hem, alter, or add vampire-worthy capes to their clothes. Students either arrive armed with their own sewing machine or pair up with one of the studio's new or vintage models, gathering together to master stitching-machine terminology and mechanics. Under the watchful eye of the instructors, students use machines to stitch zippers, buttonholes, and casings, hunker down to absorb hand-sewing and finishing techniques, and learn the tips and tricks necessary to hem and alter garments. The eight-person-maximum intermediate-level class develops students' more complex skill sets, covering the ins and outs of working with stretch fabrics, maintaining a sewing machine, as well as executing and customizing commercial patterns and the laws of space-time.
After taking the first class in each level, the remaining sessions may be scheduled in any order. All classes include the requisite materials, though beginning students should bring wardrobe items to work on, and intermediate students may choose to supply their own patterns or invisible emperor-worthy fabrics.
