Kids are naturally inclined toward improv comedy, due to their ability to invent excuses for incomplete homework, unwashed dishes, and the pet manatee that followed them home from school. Let kids make stuff up with today's Groupon: for $75, a burgeoning comic from ages 6 to 17 can enroll in an eight-week beginner improv class from Peanut Gallery Improv, with classes held in Whittier, South Pasadena or La Habra (a $175 value). This Groupon is redeemable only for Improv 101: Improv Basics (A).
Peanut Gallery Improv boosts kids' confidence and comedic prowess with team-building 90-minute improv classes. Courses focus on long-form improv, in which actors create interconnected scenes based on an audience suggestion and theater-related horoscopes. Helpful instructors impart wisdom gleaned from prior improv study at Groundlings, Second City, or Improv Olympic, as well as experience working with children through various youth programs. Courses also incorporate self-esteem building and antibullying techniques to imbue budding comedians with interpersonal skills so they can fend for themselves without building a Nerf militia. The eight-week course ends with a graduation performance that showcases newly acquired skills such as spontaneous humor and sustained focus. Classes meet once a week and group students by age in laugh-eliciting cohorts of 10–12 kids. A schedule of upcoming classes can be found on Peanut Gallery Improv's website, and classes are routinely added based on demand.
