Awesome experience! Check in was easy. We were given shovels, buckets and a sheet of what fossils we might find. We chose the options to rent a pick axe, larger bucket, mallet and safety glasses. It was fairly cheap but definitely made for an even better experience! Matthew helped us he gave us a little historical background and it was definitely entertaining! He even found fossils to give us!

Visitors can enjoy a fun day out fossil-hunting in this geological treasure site surrounded by wildlife-populated nature trails

  • What’s included in the admission: guided tour and fossil collecting in the surrounding quarry and nature trails
  • Tours depart every 15 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. The final tour each day departs at 3:45 p.m. The park closes at 4:30 p.m.
  • Valid anytime from May 1 to October 11; view the opening hours for the upcoming season
  • Guests can rent toolsets at $5/day or bring their own. Recommended tools include:
    • Rock hammer with steel handle
    • Small sledgehammer and chisel
    • Pry bars
    • Safety goggles
    • Newspaper/bubble wrap
    • Bags for storing wrapped fossils
  • Prohibited items and behavior: Dogs except for service animals; bicycles beyond the parking lot; ATVs and motorbikes; littering; firearms; archery; hunting; trapping; smoking; and alcoholic beverages. Running is not permitted due to the uneven nature of the site’s topography. Stone-throwing is also prohibited.

About Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve

At the heart of Penn Dixie is a fossil quarry—one that's so prolific it captures the attention of science buffs from around the world. But this isn't a look-and-don't-touch kind of quarry. At this 54-acre site, visitors are encouraged to dig into what was once a shallow ocean environment (380 million years ago) and to keep the fossils they find. The visitors' center even offers buckets of tools available to rent. Once they're finished with their paleontological expeditions, guests can spend the rest of their day exploring nature trails and wetlands and spotting wildlife such as bald eagles and red-tailed hawks.

Fantastic experience. Dress in long sleeves and pants and use big spray in the summer .
