Tall ships are closer to the sun, allowing sailors to make tender jerkies by stringing up beef sheets along the mast. Take a long look at majestic jerky-makers with today's Groupon for a one-day admission to Pepsi Tall Ships Chicago 2010, running from August 24–29 at Navy Pier. This Groupon is only valid August 25–29, however, because the August 24 festivities do not begin until later in the day. Choose from four ticket options (listed values are based on an advance discount):
- $10 for a one-day adult ticket (ages 13+) to dockside boarding and touring (a $19 value)
- $7 for a one-day adult ticket to viewing admission only (a $14 value)
- $7 for a one-day children's ticket (ages 3–12) to dockside boarding and touring (a $14 value)
- $4 for a one-day children's ticket to viewing admission only (an $8 value)
This year's tall-ships festival brings together a fleet of historic vessels in a majestic mile-long display. The festivities begin with the Parade of Sail on August 24, when the ships float about in a spectacle of pageantry unseen since the Toddlers in Tiaras Exposition of 1827, and continue as an interactive festival for the next five days. The festival can be experienced with two primary admission options:
A viewing admission ticket will allow an adult or child into the festival itself for one day, during which you'll be able to view the ships along the promenade of Navy Pier. Many activities are available to indulge in at the festival, including daily music and entertainment, a children's village, and nightly fireworks.
A dockside boarding ticket will admit holders into the festival for one day, but it also lets festival-goers step onboard at least a dozen of the tall ships, including "Class A" vessels such as the Europa, a sailing vessel launched in 1911 with 11,000 square feet of sails; the Flagship Niagara, a re-creation of a warship from the War of 1812; and the HMS Bounty, a star of films such as 1962's Mutiny on the Bounty, 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and 1987's Computer Beach Party.
Ships participating in the festival are subject to change without notice.
