A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear-view of the sports car of destiny.” Simplify this theory with today’s theatrical Groupon: for $50, you get a two-week session of children's acting classes at Performance Network Theatre on East Huron Street (a $100 value). Classes are for children aged 7–11. Choose between the following sessions:
• June 20–June 30 on Monday–Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• July 25–August 4 on Monday–Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Performance Network Theatre's children's acting workshop The Play's the Thing! coaches budding thespians in the fundamentals of acting as well as creative thinking, self-esteem, and teamwork. Taught by 20-year director of the Children's Theatre Network Becky Fox and long-time teacher and actor Anne Rhoades, drama students spend class-time playing at acting. By practicing fundamentals—including warm-ups, breathing, improvisation, vocal exercises, and fake-smiling at paparazzi—young players build confidence and construct skills necessary to create their own original play. Students then perform their own work at the class' culmination, acting in front of family, friends, and jealous younger siblings on stage in the intimate 139-seat theater.
