About Phelps Mansion Museum
Back when the Phelps Mansion was built in 1870, it was just one of several breathtaking Gilded Age homes on Court Street. Now, however, the Phelps home is the sole survivor of Downtown Binghamton's old Mansion Row. But it's certainly not limping along—the house has a vibrant new life as a museum and cultural center.
Originally built for Sherman D. Phelps, a businessman and onetime mayor of the city, the mansion features marble floors, exquisite woodwork, period lighting and furniture, and a fine collection of artwork. The Second Empire–style architecture was designed by Isaac G. Perry, who went on to help realize the New York State Capitol. Visitors can learn about the mansion, the historical era, and how people lived then on a guided tour (available Friday–Sunday). Periodic events, meanwhile, include musical recitals, stage plays, history happy hours supplied by the local Water Street Brewing Co., and special exhibits like Death and Mourning in the 19th Century.
