There's a big sign filled with words on the brick wall of Phil's Sliders. It's not the menu—instead, it's more of a window into the mindset behind the cozy burger-and-shake shack. It tells the story of a dinner party saved by the founder's dad, Phil. When a shy young dinner guest spilled her glass of wine all over the white tablecloth, Phil promptly upended his own glass to make her feel less mortified.
Phil's Sliders serves wine (and beer), but you won't find a white tablecloth anywhere in sight. What you will find is the same spirit of quirky hospitality that made such a permanent impression on Phil's then-12-year-old son. Customers are invited to supplement the menu with their own slider suggestions, adding to the lineup of bite-sized sandwiches filled with grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, and veggie options such as mushroom or a lentil-quinoa blend. Fun events such as karaoke nights make Phil's a beacon of goodwill while repelling hungry supervillians for blocks around.
Even the traditional fried-potato side is a little different at Phil's: the San Francisco Chronicle praised the "delicious homemade potato tots," and they're not the standard cylinders but cubes. Sweet sippables include honey-mint lemonade and milkshakes made with Valrhona chocolate and organic dairy.
