What You'll Get
Celebrate the holidays as a family with some of the season's most beloved music, presented by the Philharmonic Society at Segerstrom Concert Hall. An ingenious introduction to the storytelling power of music, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf uses the instruments of the orchestra -- flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, strings and horn -- to represent a forest's worth of animals in the story of young Peter and his adventures. This whimsical musical tale is supplemented by selections from two other great Russian composers: Tchaikovsky, who conjures up an enchanted land of magic and sweets in his music from The Nutcracker, and Shostakovich, whose jubilant, up-tempo Festive Overture has remained an orchestral favorite for more than half a century (and even served as the theme to the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow).
Shostakovich: Festive Overture in a major, op. 96
Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf, op. 67
Tchaikovsky: Selections From The Nutcracker
