What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Phostorian offers super-fast, in-home scanning of photos that currently live in drawers, boxes, and photo albums. What we find is most customers do not want to part with their photos – most of our competitors require customers to box and ship their photos. At Phostorian, we have highly-trained Phostorians, passionate people who scan photos using only the best equipment, in the comfort of the customer’s home.
As part of the Phostorian experience, the Phostorian goes to the customer’s home, scans photos, recipes, mementos – any precious document a customer wants to save – and place them on a USB drive for them to keep. In addition, we also show them how to upload, use and share these photos with their family and friends – another differentiator for us. Our Phostorian site is a social media network dedicated to uploading, saving and sharing every single photo, and each customer is shown how to use this site, preserving memories, creating stories and ultimately, capturing even more photos through sharing.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Our founder, John Ramey, lost his father when he was 15. When John’s son was born, he realized (much to his dismay), he only had four photos of his father. When he began asking his relatives for photos, a few promised to get him these photos, but never came through. He thought if he had this problem, millions of others would, too. He also thought how easy it would be if there was a dedicated network to save and share these photos. That’s how Phostorian was born – John wanted to save every photo, every memory, every story – one family at a time.
What do you love most about your job?
Unveiling photos, memories and photos that have been trapped in boxes and albums for years and years – sometimes for generations. By giving these photos a new home – and new life – we find families find a new bond with one another. They begin to share their own personal stories about the relatives and photos, and then they begin to share their OWN photos of these relatives – and that’s where the magic happens. These long lost relatives – relatives whose legacy could have been lost in boxes and albums – are remembered once again. That’s truly a beautiful thing.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
Crying with happiness. And while this may seem like an isolated incident, it happens more than you think. Many of our customers see a photo they haven’t seen in years and years, and they remember – they remember the good times and sometimes, even the bad times – but they remember. And then, they share that photo with another family member, and they get a photo back they’ve never seen before. We’ve heard time and time again, “I’ve never seen this photo, but thanks to Phostorian, I have this photo of my great-grandmother and the story behind it – and come to find out, she was a huge suffragette and played a role in women’s voting rights.” So, we wouldn’t necessarily say one single best reaction – every day we have a great, new reaction – it’s what continues to drive us, every single day.
