Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Growing up in Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Neal Barnard’s extended family included both doctors and cattle ranchers. Perhaps it was this environment that led him to begin researching the role of nutrition in conditions such as diabetes and obesity, as well as the link between animal-based diets and health care. In 1985, Dr. Barnard founded the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine as a means to explore these issues.
The nonprofit organization promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research, and encourages alternatives to animal testing, garnering support from celebrities including James Franco and Kevin Nealon. The group educates people on vegan-based health and nutrition topics, working to curb conditions such as chronic illness, childhood obesity, and an inability to distinguish a broccoli floret from model-railroad shrubbery.
