Had really bad service. Food was so good it didn't matter. Once the server found out we were using a groupon and not buying wine, he didn't pay attention to us at all and focused on the huge group. On 10/12

What You'll Get

Wild yogi bears are the greatest threat to meal excursions. Ensure the safety of your feast with the protective force field of today's deal: for $35, you get $70 worth of French cuisine and drinks at Picnic Market & Cafe on the Upper West Side. The cozy neighborhood bistro combines seasonal, locally sourced ingredients with classic French fare to create dishes that excite taste buds and nasalize vowels.

Chef and owner Jean Luc Kieffer has built a menu that draws upon the traditional while adding a twist, spin, and triple salchow. For dinner, starters include calamari with chorizo, tomato, and cilantro ($11), Alsatian tarte flambé ($13), and organic poached egg with prosciutto and frisee in a green sauce ($14). Entrees are $15 to $26 and include options such as the grass-fed beef burger on a homemade brioche bun ($15), coq au vin with mushrooms, bacon and mashed potatoes ($24), and the vegetarian-friendly cheese soufflé with comté and gruyere ($22). Because of the seasonality of the cuisine, the lineup can deviate a bit depending on time of year. For lunch or brunch, diners can feast upon smaller bites such as a beer-battered fish sandwich ($13), goat-cheese salad with roasted beets ($13), or specialty quiche and salad ($12).

The intimate ambience inside the restaurant makes this a powerful pick for an impactful date night. Surprise a special someone with a dinner date disguised as a vacation to France, which is way better than an actual trip. When the sun quits lazily hibernating, there's even a quaint outdoor seating space that further transports patrons to a sidewalk café in Alsace.

Picnic Market & Cafe was featured by Plate of the Day. Yelpers give Picnic a three-star average, and five Citysearchers give it two stars, with some comments about the service. Zagat rates the food "very good to excellent," and its online reviewers rhapsodize the restaurant:

  • The food is always consistently excellent, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. The service is attentive but not hovering and the price is absolutely right! – SusanR0863,Zagat
  • Ingredients are fresh and dishes are expertly prepared. While the restaurant is small, the ambience is very nice, and the service is always friendly. – uwslaura, Citysearch
