What You'll Get

If humans are mostly made of water, and fish traditionally inhabit water, fish should naturally occur in the human body. Fix this gap in nature’s logic with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of sushi and more at Piranha Killer Sushi. This deal is only good at Piranha's San Jacinto Boulevard location in Austin.

Piranha Killer Sushi draws diners with a menu of top-quality sushi, inventive rolls, and carefully crafted entrees. Fend off savage snack attacks with a starter such as Bahamian conch salad ($10.95). Or opt to begin with vegetable tempura fresh from the tempura plantations off the Sea of Japan ($5.25). Chopstick champions can aim their implements at sushi and sashimi such as albacore tuna ($2.50), octopus ($2.50), and red snapper ($2.25), while their fingerless dining companions can go bobbing for circular classics such as California rolls ($5.50) or signature cylinders including the marry me roll, sporting shrimp tempura, ginger cream, avocado, tuna, and strawberry ($12.95) Entrees such as ginger beef with sweet potato and asparagus tempura ($17.95 dinner, $12.95 lunch) keep carnivores from suffering meatless meltdowns.

Piranha's fashionably colorful décor ups the chic ante to critical mass; sleek orange booths cast a warm, fiery glow onto the burnished surfaces of wood tables and floors, while subtle touches of traditional Japanese décor and latticed wood and paper walls reflect the traditionally inspired fare on the menu.

Reviews

Eighty-two percent of 108 Urbanspooners like Piranha Killer Sushi. OpenTable reviewers give it an average of four stars, and Zagat gives the food at Piranha a 22:

  • If you're looking for a new twist on sushi, with new roll combinations, and great appetizers and desserts, then this is definitely the place to go! Great for a night out, and their lunch selection is by far the best value for the price. I would definitely recommend the Spicy Tuna & Avocado Salad. – Lisa Husberg, Urbanspoon
  • This was our first time to try the Austin location - we typically drive all the way to Fort Worth just to eat at Piranha's. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night or a fun night out with a group of friends. – OpenTable.com reviewer who dined on August 8, 2010

About Piranha Killer Sushi

Though its name suggests otherwise, the Forget About It roll’s unorthodox ingredients make it pretty memorable: the flavorful crunch of shrimp tempura is wrapped up with crawfish and accented by ginger cream. It's just one of the many unique combinations dreamed up by Piranha Killer Sushi's owner and chef, Kenzo Tran. Non-traditional sushi fixings are Kenzo’s specialty, from the White Lotus roll’s pico de gallo and truffle oil sauce to the Bullet roll’s cilantro chili purée and edible police officer’s badge.

That blend of the classic and unconventional runs throughout Piranha Killer Sushi's menu. Besides distinctive rolls, the kitchen serves up dishes such as Korean beef in ginger marinade, salads with octopus and spicy conch, and blue crab fried rice. Ditto the drink menu, featuring specialty libations such as the saketini, a blend of vodka, gin, and sake with a cucumber garnish. The restaurant's whimsical take on Japanese fare hasn't gone unnoticed—media outlets laud it for its tasty creations and inviting decor.
