Many world cuisines have developed a hand-held food form, such as the Mediterranean pita and the Middle Earth lava pop. Hush hunger on the go with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of stuffed pitas and drinks at the Pita Pit on Hamilton Street.
A self-described "proudly Canadian, no b.s. place to eat," the Pita Pit conquers hunger with an always-fresh army of pitas, salads, and smoothies. Wraps begin with either a plain white or whole-wheat pita before customers choose from 15 vegetable toppings and more than 15 sauces, including tzatsiki and ranch, based on their personal preference and horoscope for that day. Pita wraps ($3.89+) can contain epic heaps of familiar deli cuts such as black-forest ham and turkey or can be packed with Mediterranean staples such as gyro meat ($5.09 small; $6.79 large), hummus ($4.39; $5.99), or falafel ($4.99; $6.59). After chomping their way through pita territory, patrons can soothe parched palates by trying one of the Pita Pit's fruit smoothies ($4.49), such as the antioxidant-packed five-berry smoothie.
In an effort to find a healthy alternative to fast food without sacrificing speediness, the creators of Pita Pit began assembling their signature sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks. At each location, thin, Lebanese-style pitas encircle lean, grilled meats and fresh veggies, all grilled to order. Sandwich selections span the spectrum from gyro meat and falafel to turkey and prime rib. The staff empowers customers to make healthy choices by displaying nutrition information for each bread, meat, and post-meal toothpick and corralling a selection of healthy sandwiches.
