In 1977, military scientists invented pita pockets as a means of preventing humans from devouring pants pockets. Curb your pants-eating proclivities with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of stuffed pita pockets and drinks at one of two Pita Pit locations, in Corvallis or Salem.

Peer up at the menu, and jump-start your morning with a breakfast pita, such as the morning glory, comprised of avocado, eggs, tomatoes, home fries, grilled green peppers, onions, and your choice of cheese and zesty sauces ($5.75). Don't feel ashamed if your morning happens to be what other people call the afternoon, since breakfast pitas are served all day.

If it's lunch or dinner that you prefer, you can stay traditional with a gyro ($5.95), or unhinge your jaw and try the Dagwood club with turkey, ham, and roast beef ($6.35), or the chicken crave with chicken and ham ($6.25). Vegetarians can also find delicious items on the menu, such as the falafel ($5.50) or hummus ($5.35) pitas. If your nonconformist stomach refuses to be satiated by any of the menu items, build your own pita and choose from a potpourri of stuffings, including pickles, mushrooms, jalapeños, pineapple, tzatziki, barbecue sauce, ranch dressing, and wishes.

The Pita Pit

In an effort to find a healthy alternative to fast food without sacrificing speediness, the creators of The Pita Pit began assembling their signature sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks. At each location, thin, Lebanese-style pitas encircle lean, grilled meats and fresh veggies. Sandwich selections span the spectrum from gyro meat and falafel to turkey and prime rib. The staff empowers customers to make healthy choices by displaying nutrition information for each bread, meat, and post-meal toothpick and corralling a selection of healthy sandwiches, which dining companions can wash down with fruit smoothies.
