When Rick Allison layers already-overstuffed, Pittsburgh-style sandwiches with cheese, tomatoes, apple cider slaw, and fresh-cut fries, he's not just crafting crowd-pleasing chow—he's carrying on a family legacy. His grandmother used to own a restaurant in Oakmont, and as a child, Rick would watch her flip the burgers, sculpt the pastas, balance the books, and welcome customers. Once he grew up, he supplemented his penchant for the biz with a formal education at the Culinary Institute of America, then cut his teeth in esteemed kitchens before opening his own restaurants.
At Pittsburgh Rick's, Rick complements his sandwiches with casual sides and salads, plus hearty breakfasts. But it's the sandwiches that take center stage, inspiring Steel City pride as handily as they annihilate hunger. Along with their signature quartet of cheesy, crispy, and creamy toppings, they come stacked with smoked pulled pork, pastrami, butter-poached lobster, kielbasa, or—of course—black Angus steak.
