What You'll Get
When Eisenhower designed the Interstate Highway System, he envisioned a lawless, death-race arena where only the fastest could avoid being killed by mechanical gulls. Experience a thrilling fraction of his racing dream with today's Groupon: for $7, you get a one-day pass to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix's Historic Races at BeaveRun on either Saturday, July 17, or Sunday, July 18, in Wampum (a $15 value).
The Historic Races pit the engine gurgles of classic '60s, '70s, and younger vehicles against one another. Legendary motor-mobiles from luminaries like Jaguar, Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, and BMW zip through roughly 1.5 miles of picturesque track with loopy elevation changes and blind-entry turns that would challenge even the most suction-cup-covered of tires. The contest schedule splits racers into various groupings. Experience muscle-bound mayhem at Group Four's Trans Am race, where Mustangs, Datsuns, Camaros, and more will test their horsepower and latissimus dorsi with feats of vehicular strength. Watch real-life Hot Wheels tear up a non-plastic track in the LeMans Group Five battle, where specialty cruisers like the MG MGB, Alfa Romeo Spider, and Triumph Spitfire will square off.
Free parking is provided within the BeaveRun complex, preventing instances of road-rage-induced demolition derbies. You can buy up to five Groupons (children 12 and under are free) to fuel an exciting day out with the five-cylinder family dynamo.
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix has received extensive print and radio and television coverage in both local and national markets. Victory Lane magazine ran a lengthy feature on last year's Historic Races at BeaveRun:
- Unlike the race through the extreme twists and turns of Schenley Park in downtown Pittsburgh, it is ideal for larger cars with larger engines… – Larry Sanata, Victory Lane
