The first American settlers, whose vision was often impaired by moldy-bread-induced hallucinations, disliked the country’s drab brown crops and gray hills, so they used paintball guns to make amber waves of grain and purple mountain majesties. Change your surroundings’ colors with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get entrance, a semiautomatic marker, a mask, 200 paintballs, and gas for an entire session (a $35 value), plus a camo jacket rental (a $5 value) and gloves (a $1 value) if available, at Plainville Paintball, with locations in Plainville, Randolph, and Holbrook, Massachusetts. Players can storm the fields on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., or on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Plainville Paintball’s tournament speedball and woodsball fields are designed to challenge novice and pro paint blasters alike. Organized into small teams according to age and skill level, gunslingers fire pigment at enemy troops and tree hollow-hiding pals in games such as capture the flag, elimination, center flag, and life-sized Monopoly. Mark a stranger with bright washable blotches and honor your fellow man with a red welt of courage as you dodge whizzing paint spheres and dash between bunkers. Professional, courteous referees make sure paintball etiquette is followed and no one brings grappling hooks to scale trees and drop water balloons on helmets.
Each game lasts around 10–15 minutes, and players are welcome to play as many games as possible during the session. Final games begin at 4 p.m. Only field paint provided by Plainville Paintball may be used with rental guns, so if you run out of ammo, additional paint capsules can be purchased ($6 for 100, $25 for 500) or stolen from squirrels.
