What You'll Get
Piano instruction typically begins with a practicing of the scales before moving on to more advanced techniques that incorporate pedal work and between-song anecdotes. Blow past the basic with today’s Groupon: for $69, you get eight one-hour group lessons and materials from Play Piano in a Flash at Piano Craft (a $199 value). A new class schedule will debut each month. The next sessions begin August 22 and August 23; during these eight-week sessions, classes will be held Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
PBS’s Emmy-winning pianist Scott “The Piano Guy” Houston designed Play Piano in a Flash as an expedited course for initiating adults into the world of music reading and performance. During group classes, instructor Don Nichols demonstrates chord positions and playing techniques beneath an overhead camera, allowing students to replicate the digit dancing at their own practice stations. The Play Piano in a Flash method cultivates an ability to read and play popular tunes¬—students perform chords and harmonies with the left hand while playing melodies with the right and smashing a tambourine with their forehead. The eight group lessons begin the third week of August, at which point students will receive course materials and their very own tip jars.
