Run the Runway 2016
Although no planes will be leaving or landing at Scottsdale Airport in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 2, the grounds will be far from deserted. Run the Runway 2016 will transform the area into a festive scene as crowds arrive to participate in one of several fun runs. In addition to 5K and 10K races circling the runway, the morning will include a 1-mile Mascot Dash, which allows youngsters to sprint alongside the official mascots from each of Arizona’s professional sports teams. The post-race celebration’s bounce houses and interactive games will keep kids occupied throughout the rest of the morning. Meanwhile, adult racers can earn awards, take advantage of photo opportunities with the nearby planes, and tap toes to the live DJ sets. All race proceeds go to support the efforts of Playworks Arizona, a charity that provides playground coaching and leadership training for more than 15,000 low-income elementary school students throughout Arizona.

Recess. It's a longed-for moment in the day of any student, but in an era where "play" often means screens and controllers, the playground can be an unforgiving place. That's where Playworks comes in. Serving 54,000 Arizona students, the non-profit helps communities by reinventing the concept and execution of recess at neighborhood schools. Their method begins with sending fully trained coaches primarily to low-income, Title-1 schools all over the Valley. Once there, the coaches turn recess times into more positive experiences by leading organized, supervised games and activities that allow all students to participate. By getting children to interact, contribute, and play in a safe, welcoming setting, Playworks bolsters students' social and emotional growth during an oft-ignored period of the school day.
