Former executive chef at Google uses local ingredients in pizza & sandwiches & puts gourmet spin on breakfast classics
Teenagers idolize pizza due to its portable nature and refusal to stay in a box, man. Eat your way to independence with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of dine-in breakfast, lunch, or dinner fare at Pleasure Pizza's East Side Eatery.
East Side Eatery's owner Derek Rupp—a former executive chef at Google—transforms locally sourced ingredients into a menu of global fare praised by Good Times Santa Cruz. Among appetizers, wings dressed in mango-sambal sauce ($7) are both sweet and spicy, like chocolate-dipped cayenne peppers. Rupp crafts a number of traditional red-sauce pizzas along with adventurous disks such as Juliet's Garden with pesto, feta, and bell peppers ($14.75/10") and spicy plum chicken, with its zesty pit-fruit sauce, bean sprouts, and cilantro ($17/10").
A glass of beer or wine pairs well with the Cuban sandwich, which bookends carnitas-style pulled pork, ham, swiss, and pickles with a sourdough roll ($9.99). Four sweet breakfast specialties put a spin on classics, such as stuffed french toast, which, much like Old Faithful, gushes with seasonal fruit compote ($8.99).

About Pleasure Pizza's East Side Eatery
The staff at the original location of Pleasure Pizza has spent more than 35 years perfecting their recipes, and they've passed the proverbial pizza torch to a new downtown Santa Cruz location. The restaurant also serves beer and wine along with sandwiches and salads, which chefs craft with an eye to locally sourced ingredients. And, of course, they have pizza—18 different kinds, each hand-crafted with homemade crust, daily.
