Ice is nothing more than water that won't let people swim in it. Such stubbornness deserves comeuppance in the form of sharp metallic blades that merrily crisscross to and fro across the frozen surface: for $10, today’s Groupon gets you two admissions and skate rentals at any of Polar Ice House’s three rinks (up to a $21 value). With locations in Garner, Cary, and Wake Forest, the expansive ice parks provide plenty of space for the twistiest triple axle or the simplest slushy spin. The facilities’ hours vary, but slip-and-slide seekers can find at least one location with morning and afternoon sessions on weekdays, and afternoon and evening sessions on weekends. On-site snack and beverage bars can quell rumbling tummies long enough to execute perfect ice-cream-cake-cutting maneuvers using your choice of figure skates or hockey skates.
There are few online reviews for the Gamer location. Four Yelpers give the Raleigh location an average of 2.5 stars, and four Insider Pagers give the Wake Forest location a five-star average. Polar Ice House also has over 800 fans on Facebook.
- This rink is the newest and possibly the best in the triangle area. There are 2 ice surfaces that are nicely resurfaced. Bright, clean decor. Saturday public sessions can be crowded (Sundays are better). – J. T., Insider Pages, Wake Forest location
MVP Sports Factory
Despite having the word in its name, MVP Sports Factory isn't a factory in the classic industrial sense. It does, however, produce something: young athletes equipped with a potent blend of skill and enthusiasm. That's thanks to their signature training programs, which welcome kids 18 months old and older to learn and play the likes of basketball, indoor soccer, and "Blastball"—a gender-neutral blend of baseball and softball. The large, fully-equipped facility features twin basketball courts, a multi-purpose turf room, an indoor soccer field, and a volleyball court, while ice skating is offered at the Polar Ice House. All this space ensures participants always have enough room to master the key elements of becoming a successful athlete: understanding the fundamentals of their chosen sport, exhibiting sportsmanship, playing as a team, and looking cool in a sweatband.
