Before dance was identified as an effective workout routine, it was believed to be useful only for stamping down dirt floors in barns and avoiding falling hail. Give new meaning to your feet’s lives with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get three barre-fitness classes at Pop Physique, valid at its location on Polk Street (a $60 value).

At the end of a fruitful career that led her from the Cincinnati Ballet to the Sacramento Ballet, Jennifer Williams funneled her dance savvy into creating the barre-inspired exercise system taught at Pop Physique, a 2009 CityVoter nominee for Best Gym. Handpicked and personally trained instructors pull graceful ballet moves and pair them with Pilates and light weightlifting during a one-hour routine that torches calories and tones and lengthens the body. To wind down from a series of strength moves and core chiseling, exercisers finish class by performing deep stretches that leave them more relaxed than a tortoise moseying past a state patrolman with a radar gun. Sessions are scheduled multiple times a day, seven days a week at the newly opened space, which features a duo of roomy studios lined with bamboo flooring and a private garden lounge area.

Pop Physique

At the end of a fruitful career that led her from the Cincinnati Ballet to the Sacramento Ballet, Jennifer Williams funneled her dance savvy into creating the barre-inspired exercise system taught at Pop Physique, a 2013 CityVoter finalist for Best Gym. Her fleet of handpicked and personally trained instructors pairs graceful ballet moves with other low-impact exercises in order to chisel cores without injuring muscles. Deep stretches further preserve tendons and leave each student more relaxed than a tortoise moseying past a state patrolman with a radar gun. Sessions run multiple times a day, seven days a week at an expanding network of SoCal locations. The roomy studios are lined with sprung dance floors and design accents that lend each location a distinct personality and a chance to forget its past as a storage room for defective food processors.

Customer Reviews

Found it to be a step up from Bar Method and other similar exercise places. Liked the variety and sequence of exercises. Definitely recommend!

I would definitely recommend Pop Physique to anyone trying to switch up their workout a bit. The class I attended was great (very core-focused on muscles you don't usually work out) and the location is wonderful. The teacher/trainer was highly attentive and made new students feel very comfortable.
