The most secretive body parts are muscles, which hide behind layers of skin and appear only occasionally to help lift cars off trapped kittens. Gently flex your biceps in the absence of a cat emergency with today's Groupon: for $20, you get three one-hour fitness classes (a $60 value) at Pop Physique, with locations in Silver Lake, Studio City, Mar Vista, and Seal Beach (opening January 8). The hip, boutique fitness studio offers upbeat classes designed to make you lean, toned, and flexible.
Pop Physique reshapes patrons with its signature class, Pop Sculpt, which mixes ballet, Pilates, and light weights to work every major muscle group, focusing on arms, abs, and glutes, while improving posture, flexibility, and strength. The fitness studio features a state-of-the-art sound system, sprung dance floors (absorb shock, have a softer feel, and create a catapult effect), and ballet barres (long, cylindrical, and inanimate). Class size is limited so you can get plenty of personal attention and relatively easy access to the water fountain. See the schedule for each studio’s class times.
LA Weekly awarded Pop Physique Best of Recreation and Self-Improvement in 2009. Yelpers give Pop Physique on West Sunset Boulevard a 4.5-star average rating and the Ventura Boulevard location an average of 3.5 stars:
At the end of a fruitful career that led her from the Cincinnati Ballet to the Sacramento Ballet, Jennifer Williams funneled her dance savvy into creating the barre-inspired exercise system taught at Pop Physique, a 2013 CityVoter finalist for Best Gym. Her fleet of handpicked and personally trained instructors pairs graceful ballet moves with other low-impact exercises in order to chisel cores without injuring muscles. Deep stretches further preserve tendons and leave each student more relaxed than a tortoise moseying past a state patrolman with a radar gun. Sessions run multiple times a day, seven days a week at an expanding network of SoCal locations. The roomy studios are lined with sprung dance floors and design accents that lend each location a distinct personality and a chance to forget its past as a storage room for defective food processors.
