Today's side deal boosts the cerebral activity of babies, big babies, babies in the pop-song sense, and everyone in between with two opportunities to see the Portland Chamber Orchestra. For $12 (a $25 value), you can hear the PCO perform Mozart Swings either on Saturday, January 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kaul Auditorium at Portland's Reed College, or on Sunday, January 31, at 3 p.m. at the Venetian Theatre in Hillsboro.
For its performances of Mozart Swings, the Orchestra will be joined by a three-piece jazz troupe and special Israeli guest conductor Yaron Gottfried as it endeavors to link the stylings of English baroque and Viennese classical modes with the voice of American jazz. Luckily, you won't need to be aware of all that to savor the superb score. Gottfried's very own "Mozart Swing" and "Capriol Jazz Suite" open the show before a conclusion of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor dunks its classical grilled cheese sandwich into the other genres' refined bowl of tomato soup.
