The Body Worlds Exhibit
With more than 40 million visitors worldwide, BODY WORLDS is considered the most popular exhibition in the world, and is now on display for the first time in Maine at the all new Portland Science Center on Maine Wharf in Portland. BODY WORLDS Vital is one chapter from anatomist Gunther von Hagens’s HUMAN SAGA project—a series of curated museum exhibitions showcasing the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and the groundbreaking invention of plastination: a process that permanently preserves the human body by replacing its fluids with silicone rubber, polymers, and resins.
Featuring authentic human bodies, the exhibition examines the body through displays about distress and disease, and inspirational insights about the body’s virtuosity and resilience in a way that simple model skeletons and dissected paper dolls can’t. These detailed anatomical studies and compositions show visitors the design and function of the human body. More than 200 specimens and a dozen full body plastinates are on display, all donated through a program managed by the Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg, Germany.
