The "kayak" has proven to be a far more effective palindrome on the water than the "racecar," the "rotor," or the disastrous "taob-boat." Enjoy paddling (also known as gnilddap) with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a beginner's Discover the Potomac kayaking class from Potomac Paddlesports (a $98 value). Redeem your Groupon by registering at Potomac Paddlesports' Rockville location and scheduling through the Potomac Paddlesports website. The kayaking instruction will start at the Pennyfield Lock area of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park off River Road in Potomac, Maryland.
Potomac Paddlesports equips land dwellers with a life jacket, paddle, and kayak-shaped river legs for strutting down the Potomac River's watery catwalk. Learn the basics of kayaking from Potomac Paddlesports' staff of certified instructors, with nautical notes on flat-water kayaks, successful launches and landings, and the correct way to paddle by using your core muscles and your oar muscles to propel yourself forward in time and space. Add the forward stroke, the reverse stroke, and the sweep stroke to your repertoire of rowing routines as you liberate the coxswain dwelling in the stern of your soul while cruising around the Potomac River's lush ecosystem, potentially gazing at herons, kingfishers, and painted turtles.
This four-hour introduction to kayaking includes a short exploration of the area around Columbia Island Marina, giving you the opportunity to prove your maritime mettle as you whistle jaunty serpent-themed sea ballads and keep time with each heave-ho of your paddle. Get your Groupon and key into kayaking in preparation for the upcoming Kayak to Work Week.
Necessary paperwork must be filled out and ready 15 minutes prior to start of class. Must be 12 years or older to participate.
- This is a great, GREAT place to learn to Kayak, they are smart, patient, "cool", kind and very flexible. – gina s., Yelp
- For the DC/VA/MD area, Potomac Paddle Sports is most likely a kayakers [sic] first exposure to Potomac Paddling. Sunny Pitcher, having started his kayaking school, has moved his way up to become the founding father of commercial paddling on the Potomac. – emmy f., Yelp
- This place is the greatest, more than just a dog-friendly store, they are devoted to promoting paddling culture, and all three staff I have spoken with were helpful and informative in every way. – song s., Yelp
At Potomac Paddlesports, the first professional paddlesports school to be endorsed by the American Canoe Association, the team of American Canoe Association– and British Canoe Union–certified instructors patiently lead students through a methodical progression of flat-water paddling skills. The classes cover a variety of watersports, including whitewater rafting, river and sea kayaking, and standup paddling. The small-group classes are designed to keep students engaged, and longer trips down the Potomac challenge their skills with powerful rapids surrounded by lush scenery, interspersed with rare glimpses of bears putting on their bear suits. Outside of class, students can bond with fellow paddlers during weekly sushi meals and occasional movie nights. Further demonstrating their dedication to bodies of water, Potomac Paddlesports works to preserve the nation’s rivers, estuaries, and oceans, sharing this passion with its members through advocacy and donations to conservation programs.
