DJ Ceramix made a name for himself by placing a slab of wet clay atop his turntable and spinning it into a beautiful vase by the end of his set. Impress the audience members of your life with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of paint-your-own pottery at The Pottery Paintin' Place, located in Lunenburg.
Amateur artists ditch canvas for unglazed bisque porcelain at The Pottery Paintin' Place. Visitors peruse reams of achromatic wares, selecting one to finally festoon and kiln-fire into festive, colorful art. Prices for individual items vary widely, but pieces start at about $2 and most cost between $10 and $25. Current offerings include a lineup of Star Wars characters, including Darth Vader and Princess Leia, as well as evergreen items including jewelry boxes, piggy banks, casserole dishes, mugs, and life-size Kevin Costner statues. The kid-friendly studio also traffics in tiny bisque fairies, fire trucks, dinosaurs, and animals, as well as nonporcelain wares such as luminescent glass jewelry and troll beads (not valid with this Groupon). All kiln-fired goods are oven-, dishwasher-, and microwave-safe to ensure sturdy reuse, meaning years from now dinner guests scraping the cheese-dip bowl could discover a personalized haiku telling them to go buy some more.
Pottery Paintin' Place
At Pottery Paintin' Place, ceramic renderings of Darth Vader and Princess Leia join mugs, plates, and piggy banks atop a series of shelves. Visiting artists pluck one of these achromatic items from its waiting place before coating it in a colorful design and handing it off to a staff member, who fires it in the on-site kiln. Each piece of art emerges from the kiln able to withstand ovens, dishwashers, microwaves, and most apocalypses.
The shop's master potter, Brian Murphy, further encourages artistic expression with pottery-throwing courses, during which participants design their own ceramic creations. The newly expanded party area holds up to 24 painters, who can partake in refreshments brought from home during one- to two-hour celebrations. On-site summer camps and after-school programs cater to the younger crowd with tie-dyeing, glass-fusing, beading, and homework-torching.
