Unlike summer camps, boot camps won't require you to put on a fund-raising talent show to stop a nefarious computer company from turning Lake Cowabunga into its new industrial-waste depository. Classes are usually around 45 minutes long and meet indoors at the PRIDE gym on McClintock Road.

PRIDE Conditioning's boot-camp classes are tailor-made to send wrecking balls of encouragement through stonewalled fitness routines. All sessions are led by Doug Seamans, a certified personal trainer, weight-loss expert, and mixed-martial-arts practitioner who's equal parts combat boots and enthusiasm. Doug will assume the role of drill sergeant during boot camp; the environment is made to feel encouraging, but only for participants willing to work hard and push themselves to a critical mass of sweaty exertion. Workouts are designed to utilize every pit and portion of the human body, keeping each class interesting and challenging. Potential training includes body-weight exercises, plyometrics, dumbbell repetitions, isometrics, short-distance running, sprinting, stability balls, cardio and strength training, throwing refrigerators, and more.

Though the instructor may yell to motivate you, PRIDE Conditioning forbids insults or abuse, and any face-flung pies will be made of harmless shaving foam. With a flexible class schedule that meets six days a week and offers up to four different class times per day, there are no excuses for not taking full advantage of 12 sessions and developing muscles as rippling and ribbed as a corduroy jacket stretched over a hot-air balloon.

Bring cross-training or running shoes, a towel, plenty of water, and boxing hand-wraps or workout gloves to every boot-camp session.
