The Publick Playhouse in Cheverly will be filled with the sounds of traditional African-American storytelling, song and ceremony when Kwanzaa - It's Kujichagulia! comes to the stage. This joyous holiday celebration is hosted by nationally-renowned griot Karen "Queen Nur" Abdul-Malik. Based on ancient African harvest festivals, Kwanzaa honors and celebrates African-Americans and their heritage and culture. Queen Nur will share the significance of kujichagulia -- or, "self-determination" -- as well as the other six principles of Kwanzaa. You can expect plenty of call-and-response, songs, drumming and dancing. With her gift for spinning engaging, educational and entertaining tales, Queen Nur will lead you and your family through a lively holiday jubilee.
