What You'll Get
Using a pillowy bun as a barrier, hot dogs are safely protected from environmental hazards such as open manholes and greasy-handed schoolchildren. Enjoy snugly shielded franks with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of hot dogs and more at Pug Dog's Diner, located in Machesney Park.
The hound-loving diner Pug Dog’s Diner cooks up nearly two dozen variations of tantalizing hot dogs—many named after popular dog breeds—within its homey, old-school diner atmosphere. Pug Dog’s inspired frankfuter menu ranges from the standard char-broiled Black Labrador Retreiver hot dog ($1.99) to the monstrous one-and-one-fourth-pound all-beef Dog Sled ($9.99). Wolf down the signature Pug Dog ($3.79), which comes wrapped in bacon and topped with cheese, thin-cut ham, and onion before being put to bed in a toasted sub bun. Other canine-named entrees include the cheddar-covered Golden Retriever Dog ($2.89) and the scrumptious Boston Terrier, which is topped with bacon and baked beans ($2.99). Those that want to snack on the hot-dog’s second cousin can order the Litter of Pups ($2.99), which is eight mini corn dogs in a basket. If you’re not in a hot-dog mood, Pug Dog’s Diner also prepares tasty burgers, hot sandwiches, and stuffed baked potatoes. And those waking up early to the rooster's menacing metallic howl can dine on Pug Dog’s breakfast options, from a deluxe omelet ($5.29) to three pancakes ($3.49).

- I got a kick out of the big menu, where every item is named after the appropriate dog (Golden Retrievers are cheesy dogs; the Dog Pound is just that), and enjoyed the homey diner atmosphere. – Lisa Glowinski
