We started with a Groupon, and STAYED after seeing how wonderful this place is! We drive from Cape Coral 3 times each week just to go here. I would (and have) recommended PGMA to everyone looking for a good dojo. The instructor is patient, kind, and highly educational. My 5 year old LOVES coming here! I would give more stars if they would let me 🙂

About A Chat with Punta Gorda Martial Arts

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Brazilian jiu jitsu is meant to teach smaller individuals, child or adult, how to defend themselves against larger opponents or bullies. This is why BJJ tends to be easily taught to school-age children with great success.

What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
BJJ moves are taught in a step-by-step method. Students do not advance to the next step until they have a good grasp on the previous one, making every student comfortable in the technique.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I, Professor Tony Ruiz, started training boxing from ages 9–12 years old in Nicaragua. Moving on to tae kwon do, then amateur MMA successfully for many years. The joy that comes from teaching children to become bully proof brings me great satisfaction.

What do you love most about your job?
The best thing about my job is teaching a child or adult how to become more confident in their abilities. I want to teach children to be able to diffuse a threat before any fighting ever takes place.
