What You'll Get
If ancient settlers have taught modern Americans anything, it’s how to artificially construct coolly refreshing shadows by engineering sun-blocking mesas from advanced plastics. Take in some local techno-history with today's Groupon for a tour at the Puye Cliff Dwellings in Española. Choose between the following options:
- For $10, you get a Cliff Side Tour (a $20 value for adults, an $18 value for seniors and children 14 and younger).
- For $10, you get a Mesa Top Tour (a $20 value for adults, an $18 value for seniors and children 14 and younger).
Owned and operated by the Santa Clara Pueblo, the National Historic Landmark-designated Puye Cliff Dwellings introduce visitors to the rich anthropological history of the Pueblo Indians who lived there from the 900s to the 1580s. Led by Native American guides from the surrounding pueblos, one-hour tours traverse the dwellings and culture of the ancient Tewa people. The Cliff Side Tour runs along a blazed trail past rows of homes carved into stone, and the Mesa Top Tour explores the structures built atop the mesa and offers a vantage point for panoramic views of the valley below. Along with the refreshing mountain air, guests will take in fascinating facts about the site's architecture and the lives of those who once farmed, hunted, and built primitive rollycoasters there.
Both vertical voyages start at the cliff base, where the historic Harvey House, an early-20th-century bed and breakfast, hosts interpretive exhibits and a gift shop. Through September, tours are available seven days a week each hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., depending on weather conditions and whether mischievous coyotes have stolen all the ladders again.
