What You'll Get
San Antonio's settlers built their city on a barbecue bayou, and for decades their city sunk two feet a year into the smoky, tangy quagmire until they found a solution: drain the swamps of the sauce and slather it on their ribs. Eat your way out of a hungermire with today's Groupon: for $12, you get $25 worth of local and internationally-inspired barbecue fare at Q on the Riverwalk on Losoya Street.
Located in the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk on the Paseo del Rio, Q conjures a wealth of barbeque techniques to produce cuisine from Europe, Asia, and the Americas augmented by 16 savory sauces. The restaurant's centerpieces are an interactive kitchen in which chefs provide peeks at their secret barbecue weapon, the Wall of Fire. A conflagrant cooking creation, the Wall of Fire is a combination smoker, churrasqueira, and rotisserie grill that was banned in the former Soviet Union.
The menu invites patrons to try bread-contained fare such as the Angus burger ($12) or furiously fired entrees ranging from beef rib korean kalbi to st. louis pork ribs in half racks ($12) or full ($18). Smoky international flavor identities include tuscan costine and texas dry-rubbed. The Wall of Fire rains down eats that include the mixed grill brazillian churrasco, ($16) and the tamarind glazed, fire-grilled salmon ($19).
Q's hardwood interiors introduce visitors to the psychology of a campfire as its chefs cook on dramatic open flames in full view of diners, who may inquire between mouthfuls about cooking tips and the details of intra-staff softball rivalries. The eatery’s streamlined modern interior echoes the constant presence of heat with warm amber lighting. Those still reeling from the meat monsoon can explore the Riverwalk outside hotel doors, the blue notes of live jazz bands, and a city view.
