Foot races helped prehistoric humans determine who was the fastest, most desirable mate and who was most deserving of the mammoth-lined, checkered loincloth. Show off your sweet steps with today's Groupon: for $10, you get registration in the Charlotte Museum Mile, held on April 23 at 7:30 a.m., plus half off one appetizer at Icehouse (a $25 value). The race commences near the corner of 12th Street and North Tryon.
The Charlotte Museum Mile pits speed demons against stamina studs in a 5,280-foot foot race to be crowned the fastest man and woman in Charlotte. After being divided into applicable heats based on age, gender, and hair-growth velocity, racers will set off on their 1 mile of sweat-stained glory, passing local sights that include the McColl Center for Visual Art, Discovery Place, and Spirit Square. The foot-friendly racecourse rewards runners with a high-five and hamstring-heavy finish at the Levine Avenue of the Arts. Speedsters can then replenish spent fuel reserves by nibbling on one of Icehouse's eclectic array of appetizers ($4–$10).
All runners will receive a New Balance performance race shirt designed by Charlotte artist Ashley Lathe, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers. Mad dashers will also receive a Connect with Culture Card from the Arts & Science Council, good for buy-one-get-one-free offers and discounts at Discovery Place, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Arts & Science Council, and any man or woman to break the 1-mile world record will be win a BMW 1 series convertible, as well as the envy of sports cars and sound waves everywhere.
