Hungry stomachs are forced to contemplate cooking their own food while our brains are busy plotting ways to make Hollywood starlets fall in love with our ungainly cousins. Quell an insurgent appetite with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of modern and eclectic Mediterranean- and New American–inspired fare and signature cocktails at Ra Café and Lounge, a Sunnyside eatery.
Use Ra's menu to conjure up a flood of culinary delights, all made fresh from scratch. Start off with a tapas-style appetizer of sheftalias, grilled, pork-wrapped meatballs with garlic-lemon sauce ($7), and then proceed to impale your appetite with a trio of skewers of lemon tiger shrimp, spiced-guacamole chicken breast, Cajun-aioli sirloin, or chimichurri steak bites ($9). To fully celebrate the American café experience, order a juicy, 8-ounce All-American burger, topped with bacon and American, cheddar, or swiss, and served with a side of french fries, sweet-potato fires, or homemade chips ($11); and settle your stomach with an immigrant Magners cider ($5). There's also weekend brunch.
Head to Ra with some friends or a portrait of a runaway friend and take a seat at one of the boxy chairs beneath the silvery all-seeing eye on the wall. The warm hues (red, yellow, and orange) in the space are complemented by the glossy dark wood of tables and stools, and the softly glowing bar lures diners in for intimate conversation or an intimate handshake to seal the deal for a whale-mining permit (click here to see some photos). Ra also features a jazz band on Thursday nights, as well as a jazz brunch with live band and vocals on Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m, to add a dash of scat to any stickball team outing.
