In ancient battles, combatants used war paint to intimidate enemies, inspire cohesiveness, and get in touch with their feminine sides. Embrace the modern application of combat acrylics with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get a paintball session with equipment, jacket or coveralls, gloves, and 200 balls at Randolph Paintball, with locations in Randolph, Plainville, and Holbrook (a $41 total value). The indoor field at Randolph will be closed for the season until December 1, 2011.
Specializing in beginners and groups, Randolph Paintball provides a home for paint blasters looking to hone the art of colorfully simulated warfare. After a safety orientation by the course referees, first-time splatter artists receive the necessary gear to meld the work of John Woo and Jackson Pollack: gun; mask; jacket or coveralls; gloves; all-day air supply; and 200 paintballs. Players are grouped according to age and experience to play a series of 10- to 15-minute games with distinct rules including Capture the Flag, Elimination, and the Lord of the Rings–themed Helms Deep. Trigger-happy customers can purchase additional paintballs, perfect for playing long-range tic tac toe on the exposed brickwork in the den ($6 for 100; $25 for 500).
Players are encouraged to dress appropriately with jeans, long-sleeved shirts, and a pair of sneakers or boots to preserve the integrity of precious elbow and toe tattoos. Randolph Paintball's outdoor fields are located in Holbrook and Plainville, and the Randolph location houses the indoor space. Game sessions are held Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine or state of permanent lunar eclipse.
To make every game as exciting, safe, and enjoyable as possible, Randolph Paintball personnel conduct a safety orientation before grouping each game's 15 to 25 players into teams based on age and ability. The center also employs professional referees to oversee every 10- to 15-minute bout, as players target their rivals with semiautomatic, air-powered marking guns during scenarios such as capture the flag and elimination. Rounds unfold across the two outdoor location's eight fields, where participants duck into foxholes or overtake the Lord of the Rings–inspired Helms Deep fortress.
