From the 1870's through the mid-1930's, steamboating and railroading were a way of life to this community- indeed to the whole area. The Raquette Lake Navigation Co. with the vessel W.W. Duran, built by Captain Pohl, continues this exciting tradition. The W.W. Durant captures the ambiance of an opulent bygone era, surrounding one with wainscoting, stained and etched glass, gleaming brass, rich carpeting and polished oak, while at the same time, offering the convenience and comfort of modern amenities. Commencing its 27th season Memorial Day weekend Raquette Lake Navigation offers a variety of cruises from June-October aboard the WW Durant, including dinner, lunch, brunch, moonlight and sightseeing excursions. During the busy summer months of July and August, there are service seven days a week. In addition to meal cruises, when reservations are required, Raquette Lake Navigation offers scenic excursions on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 2:00-3:30 pm. The boat is available for private charters. Captain Pohl was appointed a marriage officer by the Town Board and has performed over 300 ceremonies in his career. In addition to wedding receptions, the W.W. Durant has hosted anniversary parties, family reunions, and corporate social functions.
