The human obsession with flight stems from a refusal to accept limitations and an intense desire to finally move out of gravity's basement. Claim your own airspace with today's Groupon: for $99, you get an introductory hang-gliding lesson from Raven Aviation in Lumby (a $200 value). Lessons run regularly through October.
Raven Aviation's licensed flight instructor Randy Rauck coaches students in the basics of aerial flight with a range of hang-gliding lessons. Over the 2.5-hour lesson, cloud-tickling neophytes undergo on-ground instruction in basic hang-gliding theory, aerodynamics, and micrometeorology before they are fitted with harnesses, gliders, and extra jet packs. Pupils then spread their wings under Randy's guidance for low-flying launches off the training hill. Over two total hours of soaring time, flyers, like newly single falcons, execute independent short flights to experiment with basic handling and simple manoeuvres. Students may soar for the joy of flight, or put class time toward accreditation to fly at other sites.
While students are free to bring their own banners or cloud repellent, Raven Aviation provides all necessary gliding gear. Students glide backed by more than 35 years of flight experience at the Freedom Flight Park, which has played host to decades of gliding competitions from the local to national levels. Though not included in this deal, those who've taken to the wind's embrace may also explore tandem flights in Raven Aviation's motorized hang gliders.
Wind rushes across wings. Hills and valleys roll by thousands of feet below. The clouds seem close enough to touch. But these wings don’t belong to a bird—instead, they’re attached to a motorized tandem glider from Raven Aviation, whose ground-level headquarters nestles in the valley below. Located inside Freedom Flight Park—a preserve established expressly for hang-gliding in 1976—Raven Aviation offers instruction and equipment to those who wish to take to the skies as the birds do, either in hang-gliders or motorized ultralight aircraft. Patrons can cruise the clouds in tandem flights piloted by experienced staff or take a beginner’s hang-gliding lesson to launch themselves solo off a training hill or the back of a friendly dragon.
