re:AB is dedicated to preserving the methods and remains of Joseph Pilates through expert teaching and an in-house cryogenics facility. The studio's instructors undergo a minimum of 700 hours of training, observation, and apprenticeship before hitting the mats to help you strengthen your abs and back, reduce neck and shoulder tension, improve posture, increase flexibility, and enhance your ability to communicate with trapped animals.
Mat classes at re:Ab offer more than just the formulaic, empty instruction found at The Pilates Factory, The Pilates Warehouse, or The Pilates Store and Internet Cafe. Classes educate and help improve quality of life through customized personal instruction based on your body type and fitness goals. re:AB is great for the inexperienced athlete or lifelong worker-outer; classes will physically challenge anyone with exercises that target previously unidentified muscles like the duchourous or the trembledon.
Three classes might not transform your body into a finely tuned machine capable of heaving large children over tall children, but it will surely get you started heaving smaller children over average height children.
- As a newcomer to the word of Pilates, and exercise in general, I am extremely pleased with my new addiction and have no plans for recovery! The atmosphere at the studio is friendly and welcoming, fostered by a helpful staff. The equipment is well spaced so you are a comfortable distance from others. The instructors ask appropriate questions and proceed accordingly. They are motivating and innovative. ..The continuity of care makes me a true believer in the Pilates method. – AliceFranks, Citysearch
- What I love about re:AB is the wonderful atmosphere, no matter what shape or what personality you will fit in here. It is a family studio where the instructors are highly skilled and willing to treat you like an honest best friend. – yellz, Citysearch
- Classes are small which allows for more personal attention, so I suggest signing up in advance. I love re:AB. Less chatting, more Pilates! – Nalani K., Yelp
Pilates on Film
The life story of Pilates founder Joseph Pilates was turned into the 1979 feature film, The Pilates Movie, in which the lovable Pilates moves to Hollywood to become famous. It was followed shortly thereafter by The Great Pilates Caper, in which Pilates stops Charles Grodin from stealing a popular diamond. The Pilates Take Manhattan followed three years later and concerned Pilates's post-college humiliations and eventual Broadway debut.
re:AB Pilates owner Brooke Siler started her Pilates instruction in 1994, and within two years was conducting training on floor mats in her living room or the client's homes. Her business continued to expand, and in 1997 she was able to move out of the living room and open re:AB Pilates. Before she allows trainers to bring their skills to re:AB Pilates, they must perfect their craft over the course of at least 700 hours. That's the amount of time required to earn Pilates certification, which ensures their classes follow Joseph Pilates' original principles. The instructors draw upon this expertise to teach Pilates sessions in a variety of styles, warmly motivating their students to strengthen their cores and increase their flexibility. Mat classes, for example, can introduce beginners to the fitness style or move at a quick pace appropriate for more experienced students. Their equipment-based classes take place on the reformer—Pilates' signature resistance-doling apparatus—or incorporate other tools, including the Pilates tower, the Magic Circle, or the Wunda Chair. Through all of their classes, the instructors emphasize achieving an overall healthy lifestyle over quickly losing weight to fit back into your elementary-school snow pants.
