4 Steps to Becoming an Insurance Agent in California

Step 1: Complete Required Pre-Licensing
All CA candidates must complete the 12-Hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course. While hourly requirements for specific lines were removed in 2026, the 12-hour Ethics course remains mandatory.

Step 2: Schedule & Pass the CA State Exam
Register through PSI. Pass with a score of 60% or higher. Be prepared to show your pre-licensing certificate of completion.

Step 3: Get Fingerprinted
Submit fingerprint impressions via an approved vendor (like Accurate Biometrics) for a mandatory background check.

Step 4: Apply for Your California License
Apply online through the California Department of Insurance (Sircon or NIPR portal) and pay the state licensing fee.
