We love the Grog House. The food is great. We've tried so many things on the menu but I think our favorite item is the tater tots. Best in town. We also appreciate that on busy nights, we were offered to be seated with another party at the same table. If you want a pub experience, that's the way to go. And I really wish more casual restaurants working on the casual pub atmosphere would do the same. It's a great chance to meet other patrons and everyone gets served in a more efficient manner.

What You'll Get

Traditional English grog has come a long way since its days as a brash, cricket-batting Royal Navy companion. See how the chap has changed with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of grub and grog at The Red Lion Grog House. This Indianapolis fine cuisine and ale haven integrates inspiration from the old and new worlds so seamlessly, soccer and football can air harmoniously on any of The Red Lion's seven wide-screen TVs.

The menus include an expansive array of imported beers and fine wines for proper tongue acculturation. Once your taste buds are prepped, partake in pub classics such as The Red Lion's fish and chips (fresh Atlantic cod fried to a golden brown and served on a bed of hand-cut chips with a side of homemade tartar sauce, $10.99) or bangers and mash (mashed potatoes and banger sausages topped with an herbed beef-stock reduction and caramelized onions, $10.99). As an homage to all Nanas and their loaf-loving grandkids, the owner's grandmother's meatloaf recipe takes both entree ($9.99) and sandwich ($7.99) form on The Red Lion's menu.

The entertainment and visual stimuli in and around The Red Lion Grog House channel Royal Albert Hall, Portobello Road, and the Tate Museum of Art. In Indianapolis's Fountain Square historic district, the establishment features weekly entertainment. The Red Lion Grog House will suit your fancy whether you are celebrating the queen's birthday, the Fourth of July, or your mate's expulsion from a pack of cute English bulldogs.

  • Of course, sampling the Fish and Chips was a given. The Red Lion version features hand-dipped cod fried to just the right crunch, with minimal grease and a side of hand-cut chips (you know them as fries). The menu boasts homemade tartar sauce, which upgraded them further. – Lou Harry, Indianapolis Business Journal
  • For those who have ever wanted to unravel the mystery of the Banger or follow the Toad down the Hole, this is a great place to start. – Jim Brown, Hello Indianapolis

About Red Lion Grog House

Red Lion Grog House is not an authentic grog house—and that’s probably a good thing. There is no dirt floor to sop up fluids, for one thing, nor are there any pirates or 18th-century British naval officers passed out from over-indulging in the titular grog—a mixture of watery beer and rum. Instead, Red Lion smoothes out the grog house’s boisterously egalitarian vibe with the accoutrements of an upscale English tavern: dark wood, wrought-iron accents, seven wide-screen TVs broadcasting sport both singular and plural, and an action-packed calendar that includes trivia nights and live music.

As with any worthwhile English pub, Red Lion keeps its focus on the food. Beer-battered mushrooms and scotch eggs serve as hearty openers for Angus beef burgers with toppings that range from roasted red peppers and bleu cheese to smoked bacon and peanut butter. The kitchen also devises its own take on English pub entrees—from puff-pastry-wrapped English banger sausages to fresh Atlantic cod and chips served on the Magna Carta. As plates parade from the kitchen, the bar has eight local and imported brews on tap to go with their 30 bottled and canned beers and craft cocktails made with infused spirits and fresh fruit.
