The 101 session covers the basics of fly-fishing, from casting lines and knotting flies to reading the environment for where trout are likely to congregate. The "In the River" 201 course builds on those skills so students can practice more complicated techniques, such as creating drag-free drifts, streamer fishing, and false casting. The shop's staff provides gear for anyone that needs it and hand-selects 13 trout ties that match destinations where the student plans to fish. Both classes last about three hours and are typically held on Saturdays. Check the schedule for a complete list for class dates and times, Groupon customers may RSVP for any scheduled Fly Fishing 101 or 201 course.

Red's Fly Shop

Surrounded by rolling hills and the distant peaks of the Cascade Mountains, the Yakima River Canyon teems with wildlife on the hills, in the water, and in the air. Wild rainbow bass and cutthroat trout swim beneath the river's rushing waters. This destination attracts many fishers and upland bird hunters. In the fly-fishing classes, instructors teach anglers to read the river and cast a line before sending them out into the Yakima River to put their skills to the test on wild trout.

Elsewhere in the canyon, a sporting-clay course beckons guests to fire shotguns at seven different stations. These practice areas simulate real-life hunting conditions for various game-bird species, including chukars, pheasants, ducks, and other species. After hunters hone their skills on clay targets, willing sportsmen and women can join the Red's guide team for a day of guided upland bird hunting.

Whether for fishing, hunting, or both, Red's Fly Shop staffers schedule single and multiday outings that depart from The Canyon River Ranch Lodge, the company's home base. At the lodge, guests can warm themselves by the fireplace or retire to rooms with patios and verandas.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed clay shooting in the canyon! It's a beautiful setting and the course was fun (great mixture of easy to challenging). Our instructor, Gino, was absolutely amazing! He was very personable, knowledgeable, & clearly outlined safety rules. We couldn't have had a better experience! I would recommend Red's Fly Shop to my friends in Seattle- it's worth the drive over to Ellensberg! :)

Friendly staff. The restaurant is worth checking out -- great food! If you're booking an activity with them, make sure your day is wide open in case they're running behind on schedule.
