Green thumbs indicate many things, including the fact that someone is an avid gardener, a semisuccessful finger painter, or actually just a gecko in need of a lift to the next truck stop. Add some color to your opposable digits with today's Groupon to Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit. Choose between the following options:
- For $25, you get two admissions to Jazz on the Terrace on either Friday, August 12, or Friday, September 16 (up to a $50 value).
- For $40, you get a family membership (a $100 value).
Established in the late 1800s as a private estate garden, Reeves-Reed Arboretum welcomes visitors to ogle more than 13 acres of professionally cultivated lawns, gardens, and woodlands. Garden guests who prefer a melodious jaunt with Mother Nature may opt to enjoy an evening of Jazz during two separate terrace performances. On August 12, pianist Rio Clemente graces awaiting ears with smooth keystrokes as he demonstrates groovy interpretations to jazz standards, and alumni from the musical training program Jazz for Teens return to the terrace on September 16 to showcase their refined skills, along with different techniques and styles learned during the program. Concert guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets with them for the evening, though the arboretum kindly asks that tables and pet bears be left at home.
The arboretum's unpaved trails weave meandering flora fanatics through blossoming leafage including 5.5 acres of formal gardens, various wetlands, a rose garden showcasing 150 varieties and designs from the 1900s, and a wildlife habitat featuring Russian honeybees and their daily re-enactments of Dr. Zhivago. Members receive discounts on programs and workshops, admission to members-only exhibition previews, access to the Arboretum library, and a 10 percent discount on plant material at participating nurseries, or other shops owned by trees.
