The 23rd-annual Valhalla Renaissance Faire takes place on two weekends, May 30 and 31 and June 5–7. Attendees, many of whom opt to come in costume, watch real jousting sessions and armored combat between knights, sample culinary delicacies, listen to ancient music, and watch dance and comedy performances. They can also try their hand at archery, javelin throws, and fencing. Kids can participate in dancing, games, crafts, puppet shows, and storytelling.
The first weekend, a.k.a. the Scottish Invasion, is geared more toward younger audiences with its shows and activities. The second weekend welcomes pirates and barbarian hordes and features scavenger hunts, costume contests, and “talk like a pirate” competitions.
Folsom Renaissance Faire
If you’ve ever wanted to go back in time, but didn’t have access to a wormhole, Folsom Renaissance Faire is your next best bet. This annual festival showcases a reimagined Renaissance, complete with a royal court, Master Shakespeare, storytellers, fairies, and a town full of colorful characters. This lost era contains a vast labyrinth of nooks and crannies, from merchants proffering ye olde turkey legs to shops stocked with leather wears and carved tankards. This year's highlight is the one of a kind International Jousting Championships with riders from Canada, Europe and USA duking it out for glory, purse and bragging rights. And no visit to Elizabethan England is complete without seeing the queen, who may also make the occasional appearance to knight a brave warrior or banish a dragon from the realm.
