If these requirements are met, duos can zip around for two hours on their own Honda Ruckus scooters, which have thick tires, storage compartments, electric start, automatic transmissions, and 100-mpg fuel consumption. Rentals are available Thursday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. For more guided joy rides, customers can join one of the city scooter tours on Fridays at 10 a.m. or Saturdays at 8 a.m. Groups meet near the United Center before rolling out to the West Loop and various neighborhoods, including Old Town and Lincoln Park.
Serious riders can earn their “M,” or motorcycle licenses, during the one-day introductory scooter class or the two-day motorcycle class. Both classes shed light on vehicle controls and maneuvering tactics such as U-turns and lane changes. In addition to providing scooters and motorcycles for student use, the staff supplies helmets and requires each student to have a permit and wear long pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Graduates of both classes are invited to take their licensing exam on-site for an additional $40. See the full motorcycle and scooter class schedules.
####Ride Chicago and Rentaruckus
Ride Chicago and Rentaruckus are two different businesses that are bonded by their passion for promoting two-wheeled transportation. At Ride Chicago this passion manifests in a variety of classes, for which it supplies beginners with motorcycles or scooters. Once student riders are geared up, the facility’s state-certified instructors teach everything from scooter-riding basics to motorcycle licensing at controlled, off-street sites across the city and suburbs. This diverse curriculum allows people of all riding experiences to climb aboard a two-wheeler and learn safe canyon-hopping methods.
Rentaruckus’s mission is a bit more concise: get people behind the handlebars of a Honda Ruckus scooter. To do this, the staff offers rentals and organizes tours of Chicago, where swarms of the minimalist bikes buzz past the city’s historic neighborhoods and sights.
