Before dance was identified as an effective workout routine, it was believed to be useful only for stamping down dirt floors in barns and avoiding falling hail. Give new meaning to your feet’s lives with today’s Groupon: for $24, you get 10 group dance classes or parties at Rigby's Jig (a $70 value).
Voted Richmond magazine's readers' Best Place to Learn How to Dance for Your Wedding, Rigby's Jig teaches feet a vast menagerie of dances with noncompetitive classes suitable for all skill levels. Talented instructors guide students down the road to unbridled undulation, whether solo or with a partner. Hips swivel and swirl during the beginners' salsa class, where Cuban culture and jazz texture blend together into a spicy mulligatawny stew. Burgeoning dancers morph into veteran twirlers in the swing class, and elbows find an excuse to rub one another while learning the fox trot's sassy movements. Every Thursday night at 8:30, dance parties shake the floorboards with students practicing their new moves or lonely sasquatches tapping their big foot, so guests are welcome to come single and find a partner.
The spacious studio at Rigby's Jig boasts enough room for large gatherings and excessively dramatic spins. Participants shake and shimmy on hardwood floors with wall-size mirrors reflecting the action, so dancers can easily monitor their movements as well as the pallid, transparent figure that follows their every footstep. Check the class schedule for times.
Rigby's Jig Dance Studio
With a lifetime's worth of experience—starting at the age of 3 and including a bachelor's in Theater and Dance from George Washington University—owner Eleanor Robertson has provided an atmosphere for group learning and inspiring dance experiences to all who have walked through the studio’s doors since its 2003 opening. Students have the opportunity to attend nightly group classes, weekly dance parties and other social events that allow participants to try out new steps with members of the broader dance community. “The Jig” participates in several non-profit fundraisers each year and has gained recognition on multiple occasions by Richmond Magazine for their services in categories such as “Best Place to Dance” and “Best Dance Instructors”.
