At one time, there were rivers on the moon and moons in our rivers. Today's Groupon celebrates the memory of days gone by with food that is both classic and inventive. For $15, you get $30 worth of creative, contemporary fare at River Moon Cafe, a charming bistro located just a few blocks from busy Butler Street.
Inviting décor, including mint- and teal-hued walls, warm lighting, and a slate tile floor, warms up the small space. Conveniently BYOB ($5 corkage fee), River Moon offers mouth-tingling appetizers such as the Tex-Mex rolls: crispy cylinders stuffed with chicken, black beans, corn, peppers, onion, tomato, and shredded Mexican cheese ($8 for two). Entrees include everything from seared scallops (bedded on mild, yellow-curry cream sauce and served with wasabi mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetable, $23) to filet mignon gorgonzola (with rosemary potatoes and seasonal vegetable, $28).
The casually elegant eatery combines culinary influences from Asia, Mexico, the Mediterranean basin, and of course, the moon. All dishes are homemade from scratch, made to order, and feature fresh ingredients. River Moon Cafe is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
This Groupon is not redeemable on February 14 or 16, Mother's Day, or Easter Sunday.
- Tex-Mex Rolls… probably are our favorite appetizer. These big, fat rolls are stuffed with chipotle chicken, avocado, corn, black beans, tomato, onion and a cheddar-jack cheese blend. A crispy Chinese eggroll wrapper holds it all together. This deliciously messy dish is served with a raspberry chipotle dipping sauce. – Sally A. Quinn, Tribune-Review
- Cream of Three Mushrooms is fabulous. This soup reeks of the rich aroma of mushrooms, the creamy base perfectly seasoned. Another memorable soup is the Mediterranean Chowder. – Elizabeth Downer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
