To make un-fine wine, simply place grapes beneath a silk pillow, repeatedly mash your head against it, and then wring the pillowcase into a nearby mouth. Taste traditionally produced fine wines with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get a Grand Tasting ticket, plus 10 extra tasting coupons (a $40 total value), to the WineStyles Riverfront Wine Festival. Choose to attend on Saturday, August 28 (3 p.m. to 8 p.m.), or on Sunday, August 29 (1 p.m. to 6 p.m.), at the Lewis and Clark Landing.
The WineStyles Riverfront Wine Festival bathes and occasionally fire-hoses wine enthusiasts in 225 quality wines, 25 beers, and a nonstop serenade of live musicians. One Grand Tasting ticket ($30) arms guests with a semiautomatic Riedel glass and lets them wander along the festival's beautiful riverfront vistas. Rows of stalls let you test-tipple tastes of numerous well-done grapes before pairing them with food samples from local vendors. The ticket price comes with 10 tasting coupons, but today’s deal adds an additional 10 coupons ($10) so that participants can swish a total of 20 jolly juices, such as the Steeple Jack shiraz from Schmitt-Sohne, the Clos Pegase merlot from Wilson Daniels, or New Belgium’s Trippel. Eight seminars, meanwhile, will inject wine directly into your brain with topics such as Pairing Wine with Chocolate (Saturday) and Go Big Red: Wines from the Cornhusker State (Sunday). By the end of the day, you'll have trained your taste buds to detect flavors far beyond the normal human range of "meat," "poison," and "Matchbox car."
As attendees wander from tent to tent, bands fill the air with peppy lyrics and primal rhythms—catch Karly Jurgensen’s acoustic pop on Saturday or Son de Llano’s pre-salsa rhythms on Sunday. Everything you taste can be purchased at the festival by the bottle, case, or tanker truck. You may also buy additional tasting coupons if you drink or accidentally inhale yours all away.
Must be 21 to attend.
