I took my 7 year old granddaughter, who loves horses but has never gotten to experience riding one, to the ranch. The entire experience was great. She was shown parts of the horse on a large model. She was shown how to approach the animal, what to avoid and how to move around them. She selected some brushes and was given a horse to groom. She learned how to use the brush and curry comb, and how to clean the hooves. Then they helped her saddle the horse and let her lead the horse around the area a couple times, starting and stopping. Then she was allowed to mount, find her seat with some simple exercises and handed the reins. There was another instructor holding the horse with a lead rope attached to the halter, but she felt like she was controlling the horse. They walked a few times, stopping and starting and finished with a trot. She unsaddled and took the tack in! She loved it. The ladies also let her and her sister (age 4) go in and pet the baby goats that were on the property. Excellent instruction and perfect adventure! She wants more!!

It was a lot different than what I expected but I learned a lot about how to take care of a horse before you just jump on and ride it.

About Robinson Ranch

Fancy, Dusty, Harley, and Bella; these are the names of a few of the horses that trot and gallop at Robinson Ranch, carrying children and adults on their backs. John Robinson, a lifelong horseman, opened the ranch in 2000 in order to help individuals with mental and emotional challenges through equine therapy. Today, the ranch's instructors teach traditional horseback-riding lessons as well as therapeutic programs. Additionally, Robinson and his team host events such as petting zoos, Western barbecues, and hayrides.
