Outdoor music festivals allow sound to travel freely without bouncing off walls, dodging flying buttresses, or getting trapped inside ear-shaped chandeliers. Enjoy unfettered decibels with today's Groupon: for $30, you get one two-day commuter pass to Rock the Resort, an open-air festival at Clay's Park Resort in North Lawrence (a $60 value). The lineup includes eight bands: Third Eye Blind, New Found Glory, Three Days Grace, Saving Abel, Dolson, My Darkest Days, Zander, and Curse Icon. The festival runs Friday, July 8, and Saturday, July 9, and bands begin at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. each night, with the last band starting at 10 p.m.
The 2011 Rock the Resort festival chutes fans through a two-day tunetopia of live rock 'n' roll paired with the watery fun of Clay's Park Resort and its adventure water park. Like Woodstock with even zippier ziplines, Rock the Resort offers a panoply of summertime activities complemented by ear-watering evening performances from an octet of popular artists. Headlining Friday night's jamboree, pop-punk pioneers New Found Glory break the waves at 8 p.m., followed at 10 p.m. by Third Eye Blind, the hit paraders behind "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper." Saturday night marinates eardrums in even more dulcet notes, with Canadian bandoliers Three Days Grace polishing off the festival at 10 p.m. with a set of sandcastle-shaking shanties ready to be savored like fine wine from a scrimshaw flagon.
With a two-day pass, fans can absorb every band and partake of the many perks and outdoor activities at Clay's Park Resort. The pass includes admission to Clay's adventure water park, featuring inflatables, a barrel roll, ring swings, and other funtraptions. Guests can also leap in the white sands of the volleyball courts or go on a spirit quest through the greens of the miniature golf course. Check the festival's frequently asked questions for information about camping, showering, and check-in times. Parking is not included in the ticket price but can be purchased for an additional $5 per car per day. All seating is general admission, and food and drinks will be available for purchase within the festival grounds.
